Niacinamide works on uneven tone, the look of pores and oil balance, and it supports the skin barrier rather than stripping it.

I have melanin-rich skin — how should I use this?

Go slower rather than stronger. Irritation is what triggers dark marks on melanin-rich skin, so a product bought to fade them can create them if it is pushed too hard. Start a couple of times a week, build up only once your skin stays comfortable, and wear sunscreen the next morning. A higher percentage is not an upgrade.
