Vitamin C is an antioxidant used for dullness and the look of dark spots. It also makes sunscreen the next morning more important, not less.

I have melanin-rich skin — how should I use this?

Go slower rather than stronger. Irritation is what triggers dark marks on melanin-rich skin, so a product bought to fade them can create them if it is pushed too hard. Start a couple of times a week, build up only once your skin stays comfortable, and wear sunscreen the next morning. A higher percentage is not an upgrade.
